Police in Laikipia County have recovered 36 sheep stolen from a farm in Kiamariga after responding to a security alert and tracking the animals.
In a statement on Monday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said officers moved swiftly after receiving information about the livestock theft, managing to trace the animals before the suspect could get away with them.
According to the authorities, the suspect fled after realising that police officers were pursuing him, abandoning the sheep in the process.
“The recovery followed a security alert, which prompted police officers to respond swiftly and track the animals,” the DCI said.
The recovered livestock were escorted to Wiyumiririe Police Station, where they were positively identified before being handed over to their owner.
Police have since launched investigations aimed at tracing and apprehending the suspect involved in the attempted theft.
The DCI said the incident demonstrated the importance of timely information in helping security agencies disrupt livestock theft and recover stolen property.
“The recovery underscores the critical role of timely information in enabling police to respond swiftly to and disrupt livestock theft,” the agency said.
Livestock theft remains a concern in parts of the country, particularly in rural areas where animals are an important source of income and livelihood for families.
The DCI urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report criminal or suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
It said information can also be shared through the toll-free emergency numbers 999 and 911, or anonymously through its #FichuaKwaDCI platform on 0800 722 203.
Members of the public can also send information through WhatsApp on 0709 570 000, the agency said.
The latest recovery comes as police continue to rely on public alerts and intelligence to track stolen livestock and disrupt criminal networks involved in the trade.
The DCI encouraged residents to share information promptly, saying such reports can help officers respond quickly and prevent crimes from escalating.
