Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has led national tributes following the death of veteran politician and military officer Gen Moses Ali, who died on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
In a statement shared on X on Saturday, Museveni said Gen Ali died at Nakasero Hospital at 4 p.m., describing him as a dedicated soldier, political leader and accomplished farmer whose service to Uganda spanned several decades.
"It is with deep sorrow that I announce the death of our brother Gen. Moses Ali. He died today at Nakasero Hospital, at 1600 hours. Gen. Moses Ali has provided service to his country for a long time, as a soldier and a political leader," Museveni said.
The Ugandan president also hailed the late general's contribution to agriculture, saying he set an example as a large-scale modern farmer in the West Nile region.
"In the West Nile region, he provided the good example of being a big modern farmer. We shall greatly miss his contribution. May the Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace," he added.
News of Gen Ali's death was first announced by former Ugandan minister Capt Mike Mukula, who described him as a patriot, freedom fighter and elder statesman whose leadership helped shape the country's history.
Gen Ali served Uganda in both military and civilian leadership for decades, holding several senior government positions and becoming one of the country's longest-serving public officials.
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders across Uganda, who have praised his role in national stability, public service and the development of the West Nile region.
The Ugandan government is expected to announce funeral and burial arrangements in the coming days.
