The legal fraternity and political circles have been thrown into mourning following the death of former High Court Judge Justice Joseph Mbalu Mutava on Saturday morning.
Mutava died after reportedly developing a sudden illness on Friday night. He had attended a burial ceremony earlier in the day and was said to have been in good health before he fell ill.
His death was confirmed by former Machakos Senator and Parliamentary Service Commission Commissioner Johnson Muthama, who described the former judge as a close family friend.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my long-time family friend, Former High Court Judge Justice Joseph Mbalu Mutava, husband to Kibwezi East MP Hon. Jessica Nduku Mbalu,” Muthama said.
Mutava was married to Kibwezi East MP Jessica Nduku Mbalu, with his death drawing tributes from several political leaders.
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka also mourned Mutava, describing him as a man who served with honour and quiet distinction.
Following his death, Mutava's body was taken to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi as his family started preparations for his burial.
Mutava joined the Judiciary as a High Court judge in 2011 and was stationed at the Milimani Commercial Courts, where he served until his removal from the Judiciary in 2016.
Before and during his time on the bench, Mutava was recognised as a legal practitioner with a notable career in Kenya's judicial and legal circles.
Details surrounding the cause of his death had not been made public by the time of publication, while funeral arrangements were still being worked out by the family.
