Caucus threatens to boycott FKF WPL games this weekend

In a signed letter dated March 11, 2026, caucus chairperson Richard Teka said that although there have been teething problems since the federation took office, the Hussein–Mariga led administration has shown little interest in addressing issues affecting women’s football in Kenya.

The Football Kenya Federation Women Premier League (FKF WPL) caucus has issued a stern warning to Kenya’s football governing body, stating that all league matches scheduled for the weekend of March 14 and 15, 2026, will be boycotted unless FKF leadership meets WPL representatives and resolves their concerns.

In a signed letter dated March 11, 2026, caucus chairperson Richard Teka said that although there have been teething problems since the federation took office, the Hussein–Mariga led administration has shown little interest in addressing issues affecting women’s football in Kenya.

“The FKF WPL caucus convened today and noted that none of the issues previously raised have been resolved. The federation has also shown little interest in charting a way forward on the persistent challenges faced by stakeholders in women’s football,” the first paragraph of the letter reads.

“As a result, we have unanimously resolved to boycott the league matches scheduled for March 14 to 15, 2026, until the FKF leadership, led by the president, meets with FKF WPL leaders and demonstrates solutions to the unresolved challenges.”

According to the letter, the boycott decision followed a virtual meeting held on March 11, chaired by Richard Teka of Kibera Women Soccer FC. Minutes from the meeting indicate that 11 top-tier Women Premier League clubs voted in favour of a boycott or postponement, citing a lack of communication from the federation on previously raised concerns.

FKF responded on Thursday with a letter urging clubs not to postpone the scheduled matches. The federation’s Acting CEO, Dennis Gicheru, called for an urgent meeting with club leadership.

“The Federation had already planned structured engagements with all clubs across the leagues, through which it intended to meet respective club leadership and address matters affecting the leagues comprehensively,” Gicheru said in the FKF letter.

Although the caucus did not publicly detail the specific issues affecting women’s football that were presented to FKF, it noted that despite follow-ups via email, text messages, and phone calls, the federation has remained unresponsive to a list of demands first submitted in January 2026.

If the boycott proceeds, several high-profile matches could be affected this weekend, including Vihiga Queens vs Soccer Assassins and Ulinzi Starlets vs Kayole Starlets.
