Two arrested as police recover Sh1.55 million cannabis haul in Kilifi raid

A police operation targeting the illegal drug trade in Kilifi County has led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of cannabis valued at about Sh1.55 million, as security agencies step up intelligence-led efforts to dismantle drug networks across the country.

The operation, conducted on Monday at Divayo village in Malindi Sub-County, saw officers recover a total of 51.6 kilograms of cannabis after uprooting a large section of cannabis plants and seizing processed drugs during the raid. The suspects are in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court on drug-related charges.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the raid was carried out by a multi-agency security team after receiving credible intelligence on the illegal activity.

"Acting on actionable intelligence, today, 3 August 2026, a multi-agency security team conducted a successful intelligence-led operation at Divayo village in Malindi Sub-County, Kilifi County, leading to the arrest of two suspects," the statement said.

Police said the officers first uprooted 43 kilograms of cannabis sativa plants before recovering another 8.5 kilograms of processed cannabis together with six rolls of the drug from the targeted location.

"During the targeted raid, the security team uprooted 43 kilograms of cannabis sativa plants and also seized 8.5 kilograms and 6 rolls of cannabis, bringing the total recovered to 51.6 kilograms, with an estimated street value of Sh1,548,000," NPS said.

The recovered cannabis has since been secured as exhibits at Langobaya Police Station as investigations continue. The two suspects remain in custody while awaiting their day in court.

"The recovered cannabis has been kept as exhibits at Langobaya Police Station. Meanwhile, the arrested suspects await arraignment in court to face relevant charges," the statement added.

The latest seizure comes as the National Police Service continues to intensify operations against the production, distribution and trafficking of illegal drugs in different parts of the country.

"The National Police Service reiterates its firm commitment to the fight against illicit drugs across the country," the statement said.

Police also thanked members of the public for sharing information that supports security operations, saying public cooperation remains important in the fight against crime. They encouraged Kenyans to continue reporting suspicious activities through the nearest police station, emergency numbers 999 and 911, the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline on 0800 722 203, or anonymously through WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
