Gachagua vows county-by-county campaign against UDA leaders over Ol Kalou poll

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced a political campaign targeting Mt Kenya leaders who supported the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) during the Ol Kalou mini-poll, saying he will tour their constituencies to rally voters against them ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a meeting with Murang’a leaders at his Wamunyoro home on Saturday, August 1, 2026, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader said the decision followed calls from elders in the Mt Kenya region, whom he claimed had urged him to confront leaders they believe abandoned the community's political position by campaigning against DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Ngotho.

According to Gachagua, the elders directed him to take the political battle to the leaders' home areas and ask residents to reject them at the ballot in 2027.

“Gachagua elders have asked me to face those who went against the community in Ol Kalou in their home constituencies. I am going to begin with Kinangop, then go to Laikipia East and campaign against Mwangi Kiunjuri, who is one of the biggest traitors of our community.”

The former deputy president said his first stop will be Laikipia East Constituency, where he intends to campaign against area MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, accusing him of leading UDA's campaigns during the Ol Kalou by-election.

He said he will then move to Kinangop Constituency to campaign against MP Kwenya Thuku, adding that his goal is to persuade voters to reject the legislator in the next General Election.

Gachagua also announced plans to take his campaign to Nakuru County, where he said he will spend three days beginning Friday, August 7, campaigning against Governor Susan Kihika.

He accused Kihika of playing a role in the violence reported during the Ol Kalou mini-poll and vowed to mobilise Nakuru residents against her re-election bid in 2027.

The DCP leader further revealed that he will return to Embu County to intensify his campaign against Governor Cecily Mbarire.

Although he held several political rallies in Embu last week, Gachagua claimed residents had asked him to return for five more meetings following Mbarire's support for UDA in the Ol Kalou contest.

He also criticised the three female governors from the Mt Kenya region, accusing them of betraying the community by backing UDA during the by-election. He said voters should hold them accountable when they seek re-election in 2027.

Before leaving for a planned visit to the United States later this month, Gachagua said he will also campaign in Kiambaa Constituency against MP John Kawanjiku.

He accused the legislator of being behind the violence witnessed during the Ol Kalou campaigns, including the attack on his convoy.

The former deputy president added that he will also visit Kikuyu Constituency to campaign against National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, whom he accused of leading efforts against DCP during the mini-poll.

Gachagua maintained that his planned tour is aimed at ensuring leaders who backed UDA during the Ol Kalou by-election answer to voters in their own constituencies before the 2027 General Election.

He said the campaign is intended to hold accountable those he believes went against what he described as the political direction taken by the Mt Kenya region during the mini-poll, insisting that the electorate will have the final say when the country heads to the ballot.
