Guangzhou Consulate opens as Kenya steps up China engagement

Kenya has stepped up its engagement with China after officially opening a new Consulate General in Guangzhou, a diplomatic mission expected to bring government services closer to Kenyans in the region while opening more opportunities for trade, investment and business cooperation.

The new mission was inaugurated on Tuesday, August 4, by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei, who said Guangzhou will serve as an important base for strengthening relations with one of China’s most active economic regions.

“I was honored to officiate the inauguration of the Consulate General of the Republic of Kenya in Guangzhou.

“I was joined by Ambassador Willy Bett, Consul General James Muhati, senior officials from the Foreign Affairs Office of the Guangdong Provincial People’s Government, Heads of Consulate General, members of the business community, and leaders of Kenya’s diaspora,” he wrote.

The Consulate General will oversee Kenya’s interests in Guangdong, Fujian and Hainan provinces, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Sing’Oei said the areas fall at the heart of China’s manufacturing, technology and international trade sectors, making them an important destination for Kenya’s growing economic partnership with China.

“These provinces are home to vibrant manufacturing and technology ecosystems, major ports, global supply chains, innovation centres and rapidly growing consumer markets,” he added.

He said the new office will make it easier for Kenyans living and working in the region to access consular services while also supporting Chinese businesses seeking closer trade and investment links with Kenya.

“The Consulate General in Guangzhou will bring consular services closer to Kenyans living and working in the region, while also facilitating services for Chinese partners engaged in bilateral trade and investment,” he concluded.

The Guangzhou mission is the latest addition to Kenya’s growing diplomatic network.

Last month, the country established a resident diplomatic mission to the Holy See, with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announcing that President William Ruto had appointed Kenya’s first ambassador to the Holy See.

“Kenya has established a resident mission to the Holy See with President Ruto appointing a practicing catholic as our first ambassador,” he said.

Mudavadi said Kenya continued to enjoy a strong relationship with the Catholic Church across different levels of leadership and society.

“Kenya’s partnership with the Catholic church remains strong from the highest levels of leadership to parishes across the country,” he added.

Kenya also recently opened its High Commission in Kingston, Jamaica, marking another milestone in expanding its diplomatic presence overseas.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 15, the mission announced that it had officially begun operations.

“A historic milestone for Kenya-Jamaica relations. The High Commission of the Republic of Kenya has officially commenced operations in Kingston, Jamaica,” the statement read.

The High Commission also confirmed that Kenya’s High Commissioner, Mwenda Karisa, had arrived in Jamaica to begin her diplomatic assignment.

“On Monday, July 13, Mwenda Karisa, the High Commissioner arrived in Kingston to begin her tour of duty,” the statement added.
