Former US President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer has spread to his bones and is causing significant pain, his son Hunter Biden has said.
Hunter disclosed the development during an interview with the BBC on Friday evening, describing his father’s condition as painful and debilitating and saying the illness had been difficult for the family.
Despite his health challenges, the 83-year-old former president remains publicly active and continues to speak on issues important to him.
“The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further,” Hunter Biden said. “It’s very painful, and it’s very debilitating in many respects.”
The 83-year-old former president revealed in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, less than four months after leaving the White House.
Hunter said the diagnosis and its progression had been particularly difficult for the family, describing the experience of watching his father deal with the illness as painful.
“It’s really sad to watch. The only thing that I’d say about my dad, about his health right now, is I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good.”
Despite the worsening condition, Hunter said his father continued to remain active in public life and speak about issues that matter to him.
“He’s still doing his thing. He so believes in this country.”
Biden served as US president from 2021 to 2025 and was the oldest person to hold the office. His age and health became major political issues during his presidency, particularly during the 2024 election campaign.
He abandoned his bid for re-election after a poor performance in a televised debate against Donald Trump, who later won the presidential election.
Biden and members of his administration subsequently faced criticism over whether the full extent of his health and age-related difficulties had been adequately disclosed while he was in office.
His cancer diagnosis was announced after he had left the presidency. At the time, his office said doctors had discovered a small nodule on his prostate following an examination.
Hunter’s latest comments provide an update on the former president’s condition, although no further medical details were provided in the information shared.
The disclosure comes as Biden continues to maintain a public presence despite his illness. His son said the former president remained committed to speaking about issues he considers important.
Hunter also expressed concern about the toll the disease was taking on his father, saying he wished Biden would complain more about his health.
The former president is also preparing to publish a memoir, titled Promise Me, America, which is expected to be released after the US midterm elections.
The latest development places Biden’s health back in the public spotlight, months after his cancer diagnosis was first announced.
Hunter’s account indicates that the disease has progressed beyond the prostate and into the bones, while Biden continues to participate in public engagements despite the pain associated with his condition.
