The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) has welcomed the High Court's decision to convict former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and his two co-accused in the murder of Sharon Otieno, describing the judgment as a landmark moment in the pursuit of justice after a case that has lasted nearly eight years.

In a statement issued on Thursday, FIDA-Kenya said the verdict marked a significant milestone for Sharon's family, who had remained steadfast in seeking accountability for the killing of Sharon and her unborn child.

"FIDA-Kenya welcomes today's judgment by the High Court finding the three accused persons guilty of the unlawful murder of Sharon Otieno. This judgment marks a significant milestone in a case that has spanned nearly eight years and has tested the resilience and patience of Sharon's family as they pursued justice through the courts," FIDA-Kenya Chairperson Christine Kungu said.

The women's rights organisation noted that throughout the lengthy legal process, Sharon's family remained committed to pursuing justice despite the challenges encountered during the trial.

It said the judgment represented an important step towards accountability for a crime that attracted national attention and underscored the importance of ensuring justice through the courts.

FIDA-Kenya also commended the judiciary for its handling of the case, as well as the prosecution and other parties involved in the proceedings.

"FIDA-Kenya appreciates the diligence with which the Court has handled this complex matter, the efforts of the prosecution in presenting its case, and the commitment of all parties to seeing the judicial process through despite the challenges encountered over the years," the statement said.

The organisation, which acted as watching brief counsel for Sharon Otieno's family, also recognised the courage shown by witnesses who testified during the trial.

"As counsel watching brief for Sharon's family, we acknowledge the courage demonstrated by the witnesses who came forward and the resolve of the family throughout the trial," FIDA-Kenya added.

While welcoming the convictions, the organisation acknowledged that no court decision could undo the loss suffered by Sharon's family.

"While no judgment can restore the life of Sharon and her unborn baby, today's decision represents an important step toward accountability and reinforces public confidence that justice can be achieved through the rule of law," the statement said.

FIDA-Kenya pledged to continue supporting Sharon's family through the remaining stages of the criminal justice process, including sentencing and any subsequent legal proceedings that may follow.

The organisation also announced that it would issue a more detailed statement after reviewing the High Court's judgment in full.

The chairperson further reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to standing with victims of gender-based violence and their families in the pursuit of justice.
