Karua: Fight for better Kenya goes beyond elections

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has said the drive to build a better Kenya should not be limited to election periods, insisting that the defence of justice, constitutional order and the rights of citizens is a continuous responsibility that extends far beyond the ballot.

In a statement shared on her X account on Tuesday, Karua said her dedication to public service has remained firm despite being out of elected office for more than 10 years, maintaining that leadership is defined by service to the people rather than the position one holds.

“For over a decade, I have not held an elected office. Yet my commitment to justice, constitutionalism, and the rights of Kenyans has never wavered.

“I did not enter public life in search of status or privilege. I entered it to serve, and that purpose remains unchanged,” she stated.

Karua said public service should not be judged solely by electoral victories, arguing that leaders can continue advancing the interests of citizens even when they are not occupying public office.

She maintained that efforts to push for reforms, defend constitutional values and protect the rights of Kenyans should continue before, during and after elections.

“The struggle for a better Kenya does not begin at the ballot box, nor does it end with an election. It is a lifelong commitment to the people.”

Her remarks come as the People’s Liberation Party steps up preparations for the 2027 General Election through a nationwide recruitment exercise aimed at attracting aspiring governors, senators, members of the National Assembly, women representatives and members of county assemblies.

The recruitment drive is part of the party’s wider strategy to strengthen its grassroots structures and increase its political presence across the country ahead of the next polls.

In recent months, PLP has unveiled aspirants in Meru County and fielded candidates in several by-elections, including the recent Ol Kalou parliamentary contest, as it works to expand its support base.

The party says its agenda is anchored on justice, accountability, constitutional governance and leadership that puts the interests of citizens first.

Karua has also continued to position herself among the country’s leading opposition figures ahead of the 2027 presidential election, having indicated her intention to challenge President William Ruto.

Over the past few months, she has increased engagements across the country, focusing on governance, accountability and constitutional matters while calling for stronger protection of democratic institutions.

Her latest remarks reinforce her message that political participation should not be viewed only through elections but as an ongoing duty to protect constitutional principles and serve the public.

The statement also reflects PLP’s plan to combine its 2027 election preparations with a broader campaign centred on governance reforms, accountability and greater citizen participation, as the party seeks to present itself as a movement committed to long-term public engagement beyond electoral contests.
