Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops under Operation Amani Boni have foiled multiple terrorist attacks in Lamu County after detecting and safely destroying four concealed improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted along key supply routes, in what the military described as another major success in ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
According to the statement by KDF on Monday, the explosives were discovered during intelligence-led route clearance patrols targeting critical transport corridors used by both security personnel and civilians, highlighting the persistent threat posed by terrorist groups despite sustained military pressure in the region.
The military said the first device was discovered during a dominance, route clearance and link-up patrol when soldiers detected a concealed pressure plate IED before it could be triggered.
"Demonstrating vigilance and operational expertise, the soldiers immediately secured the area and conducted a controlled detonation, rendering the explosive harmless and preventing what could have been a potentially devastating attack," the statement said.
Days later, troops conducting another routine patrol in the Sarira area uncovered three more concealed IEDs positioned approximately 5.1 kilometres, 8.27 kilometres and 8.4 kilometres along major supply routes.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists were deployed to the scene, where they secured the affected locations and safely destroyed all three devices without causing casualties or damage.
The military said the repeated recovery of hidden explosives reflects a shift in tactics by terrorist groups following sustained operations that have significantly weakened their ability to launch conventional attacks.
"The repeated recovery of IEDs along supply routes underscores the continued reliance by terrorist elements on hidden explosive devices following sustained operational pressure that has significantly constrained their ability to conduct conventional attacks," KDF said.
It added that the successful operations also demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-driven missions, disciplined route clearance procedures and the professionalism of troops operating under Operation Amani Boni.
The Commander of Operation Amani Boni said offensive and stabilisation operations remain active across the theatre, with troops maintaining control of key areas, securing vital lines of communication and pursuing those responsible for planting the explosives.
"These sustained efforts continue to degrade terrorist capabilities while enhancing the safety and confidence of residents, businesses and travellers across the region," the commander said.
The KDF said the successful detection and neutralisation of the four IEDs not only protected military personnel but also safeguarded civilian lives and preserved the security of vital transport routes, reaffirming its commitment to countering terrorism and supporting lasting peace and stability in Lamu County.
