KRA: File tax returns by August 20

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has reminded taxpayers to file their Value Added Tax (VAT), Excise Duty, Turnover Tax, Monthly Rental Income Tax, and VAT on Digital Marketplace Supply returns by August 20.

The tax authority urged businesses, landlords and other taxpayers with relevant obligations to complete their filings before the deadline as part of its compliance drive.

In a message shared by KRA Care on Monday, the authority called on taxpayers to ensure all applicable returns are submitted on or before August 20.

“Make sure umefile returns za Value Added Tax, Excise Returns, Turnover Tax, Monthly Rental Income Tax, and VAT on Digital Marketplace Supply on or before 20th August,” KRA said.

The authority directed taxpayers to use its iTax platform to submit their returns.

“File now via https://itax.kra.go.ke,” the message said.

The reminder covers several categories of tax obligations affecting businesses, landlords and individuals engaged in taxable activities.

VAT returns apply to registered taxpayers supplying taxable goods and services, while Excise Duty returns relate to businesses dealing in goods and services subject to excise taxation.

Turnover Tax applies to eligible businesses based on their gross sales, while Monthly Rental Income Tax covers qualifying rental income received by property owners.

The reminder also includes VAT on Digital Marketplace Supply, reflecting tax obligations associated with taxable supplies made through digital platforms.

KRA's message forms part of its efforts to encourage taxpayers to meet statutory filing requirements within the prescribed timelines.

Taxpayers are expected to establish which returns apply to their activities and submit the relevant declarations through the authority's electronic platform.

The authority did not provide further details in the reminder on penalties or other consequences that may arise from late filing. However, taxpayers who have obligations falling within the listed categories have been urged to complete their returns before the deadline.

The August 20 deadline provides taxpayers with a specific date by which the listed returns should be submitted.

KRA has increasingly encouraged taxpayers to use digital platforms for tax-related services, allowing them to file returns and undertake other compliance processes electronically.

The iTax platform referenced in the reminder is the channel identified by KRA for taxpayers to submit the listed returns.

The authority's notice is particularly relevant to taxpayers who may have multiple filing obligations, including businesses required to submit more than one type of return.

Taxpayers are therefore advised to review their obligations and ensure that all applicable returns have been filed before the deadline.

KRA's reminder comes with the tax authority continuing to emphasise timely compliance among taxpayers. Failure to meet filing requirements can expose taxpayers to applicable penalties and other enforcement measures under tax laws.

The authority's message was accompanied by the hashtag #ComplianceReminder, reaffirming its focus on timely filing.

Taxpayers who need to submit the listed returns have been encouraged to act before the deadline rather than wait until the final day.

KRA said the relevant returns should be filed on or before August 20 through its online platform.
