Mama Ida Odinga has said the legacy of her late husband, former Prime Minister and former ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga, should be embraced by all Kenyans regardless of their political differences as the country prepares to mark the first anniversary of his death.
Speaking at Capitol Hill on Thursday, September 17, 2026, Mama Ida said Raila’s contribution to Kenya went beyond his political supporters and allies, arguing that his commitment to democracy, justice and peace was shared by Kenyans across political divides.
“As we approach the first anniversary of his passing, we recognize that his legacy belongs to every Kenyan who believes in democracy, justice, and peace, including those who held different political viewpoints, as we were united in our shared desire for a better Kenya,” Mama Ida said.
The remarks came as the family and Raila Odinga’s secretariat began preparations for a series of activities to mark one year since his death and celebrate his contribution to the country.
Raila died on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, aged 80, while receiving medical treatment in Kochi, India.
He served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 after the coalition government formed following the disputed 2007 presidential election. He was also one of Kenya’s most prominent opposition leaders and unsuccessfully sought the presidency on five occasions.
At Capitol Hill, a place closely linked to Raila’s long political career, Mama Ida welcomed guests who had gathered as preparations for the anniversary celebrations took shape.
“I am deeply honoured to welcome you to Capitol Hill today,” she said.
Mama Ida recalled the important role Capitol Hill played during Raila’s political journey, but said the former Prime Minister’s influence extended far beyond the grounds that served as his political base for many years.
“While these grounds served for decades as the central hub for my late husband’s political journey, the true essence of Raila Odinga belonged to the entire nation,” Mama Ida said.
Raila’s political career spanned several decades and saw him become a key figure in Kenya’s political history.
He remained a leading opposition figure after serving as Prime Minister and played a prominent role in the country’s political affairs for many years.
Reuters described him as a central figure in Kenya’s political evolution, including the country’s transition to multiparty politics and the adoption of the 2010 Constitution.
Focus on unity
Mama Ida said Raila’s political life was also marked by his efforts to bring Kenyans together.
“His life was defined by tireless commitment to bringing people together,” she said.
Her remarks came days after the Raila Odinga secretariat announced plans for an inclusive first anniversary commemoration.
The secretariat said supporters who did not have an opportunity to mourn Raila following his death would be included in the planned events.
Raila’s death on October 15, 2025 brought an end to a political career that had stretched across several decades and made him one of the most recognised figures in Kenya’s political history.
His death was followed by national mourning and a state funeral, with thousands of Kenyans taking part in ceremonies held in his honour.
As the first anniversary draws closer, Mama Ida said Raila’s legacy should not be limited to the people who supported him politically.
She said it should also be embraced by Kenyans who disagreed with his political views, noting that both sides could be united by the wider goals of democracy, justice, peace and the pursuit of a better Kenya.
