Traffic along the Nairobi Southern Bypass has been disrupted after the Kenya National Highways Authority closed a section of the road following an accident near Karinde, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.
The authority announced that the Ole Sereni-bound lane between Thogoto and Dagoretti interchanges had been temporarily shut to pave way for clearance operations and restore safety along the busy corridor.
In a notice issued on Friday, KeNHA said the decision to close the stretch was necessary after the crash interfered with normal traffic flow on the highway, which is used daily by thousands of motorists.

The agency cautioned road users to prepare for delays as recovery efforts continue at the scene.
“Traffic delays are expected along the affected section, and motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly,” the advisory stated.
Motorists who had not yet started their journeys were urged to avoid the route altogether and use other roads to ease congestion.
“Motorists who have not yet commenced their journeys are advised to consider using the Kikuyu - Mutuini - Dagoretti (C63 Road) as an alternative route,” the statement said.
Traffic marshals and enforcement officers have since been deployed to guide motorists through diversions and maintain order along surrounding roads.
KeNHA also called on drivers to follow instructions from officials on site to support ongoing operations.
“Motorists are further advised to cooperate with traffic marshals and enforcement officers on site as clearance efforts continue,” the advisory added.
The authority said teams were working continuously to reopen the road and return traffic to normal while ensuring safety for all road users.
It noted that the Nairobi Southern Bypass plays a key role in linking different parts of the city and reducing congestion within the central business district, meaning any disruption along the route quickly affects traffic across Nairobi.
The closed section between Thogoto and Dagoretti interchanges is especially important for commuters travelling between the western parts of the city and the southern bypass.
KeNHA did not immediately give details on what caused the accident or confirm whether there were any casualties, noting that operations were still ongoing at the time of issuing the advisory.
The agency, which oversees the development, maintenance, and management of national highways, said it will continue to provide updates through its official communication channels.
It urged motorists to remain alert and observe road safety rules, especially during such incidents that require temporary diversions.
The notice was signed by Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli, who assured the public that every effort was being made to restore smooth traffic flow as soon as possible.
