A domestic passenger flight operating between Nairobi and Mandera veered off the runway during landing at Mandera Airstrip on Friday morning, triggering an emergency response but ending with all passengers and crew safely evacuated and no injuries reported.

The aircraft, which had departed from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on a scheduled service, lost control shortly after touching down and left the runway before coming to a stop near the perimeter fence. The incident caused brief tension at the airstrip as emergency teams rushed in to secure the scene and assist those on board.

The Kenya Airports Authority confirmed that the aircraft was carrying 32 passengers and four crew members when the incident occurred at about 0910 hours local time.

In its statement, the authority said:
“The aircraft, carrying 32 passengers and 4 crew members, veered off the runway during landing at approximately 0910 hours local time and came to a stop at the airstrip's perimeter fence," the authority said.

Emergency response measures were activated immediately, with ground teams moving in to evacuate all passengers and crew and provide assistance at the scene. Authorities later confirmed that everyone on board was safely removed from the aircraft.

“Passengers and crew were safely evacuated, and appropriate ground support was immediately provided. There were no injuries reported to the passengers or crew,” the authority stated.

Despite the incident, the authority moved to reassure the public over safety standards at its facilities, saying operations remain under strict safety and security measures.

“The Authority reaffirms its unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, security, and operational excellence across all its facilities,” the statement added.

Early accounts from officials and witnesses indicated that the aircraft appeared to lose control shortly after landing before veering off the runway into surrounding vegetation. The situation prompted a swift emergency response from airport and security teams.

Investigators have since begun examining the incident to establish whether it was caused by mechanical failure, weather conditions, or other operational factors. No official cause has yet been confirmed, and the aircraft remains secured as the probe continues.
