Retired Chief Justice and 2027 presidential hopeful David Maraga has set in motion a country-wide campaign to educate Kenyans about their civic rights and responsibilities after successfully raising Sh7,745,788.04 for his political efforts.
The initiative, called Ukatiba Caravan, will focus on engaging young voters and encouraging active participation in the democratic process.
In a post on his official X account early Thursday, January 29, 2026, Maraga thanked the 1,834 Kenyans who contributed to the fundraising drive, singling out the Kenyan diaspora for providing more than Sh6 million in support.
“I am deeply grateful to the 1,834 of you who have made a financial contribution to our campaign, with a total of Sh7,745,788.04 so far. I am particularly thankful to the Kenyans in the Diaspora who have made a significant contribution of more than 6 million shillings, which has boosted our efforts immensely,” Maraga stated.
He said the funds would be used to launch the #UkatibaCaravan, which will travel across Kenya conducting workshops, town hall sessions, and community outreach programmes aimed at increasing voter registration among the youth.
“In the spirit of transparent and accountable campaign fundraising, we are embarking with these funds on the #UkatibaCaravan, a country-wide civic education campaign geared towards increasing voter registration among our young people as we aim to meet our target of #GenZ15MillionStrong.”
The initiative targets registering 15 million Gen Z voters through the #GenZ15MillionStrong campaign. Maraga explained that the caravan will visit communities across the country to educate citizens on the importance of civic participation and responsible voting.
He encouraged Kenyans to continue supporting the campaign through donations via M-Pesa, credit cards, PayPal, or Stripe.
“Join the #UkatibaMovement by making your financial contribution through M-Pesa, credit card, PayPal, or via Stripe at https://donations.davidmaraga.com,” he wrote on X.
Maraga has said that his decision to run for president was influenced by the 2024 Gen Z protests, which he described as a turning point in his life.
Speaking in an interview with Obinna TV Extra on Monday, November 24, 2025, Maraga shared the moment that motivated his political ambition.
“I had never aspired to be a politician. We can’t all be politicians; some people have to do other things. But what I saw last year shocked me: young people being shot like rats. As a country, I couldn’t believe we could allow that,” Maraga stated.
He said the protests erupted over the Finance Bill, but authorities responded with heavy-handed measures instead of listening to young people, highlighting a gap in how the state engages its youth.
