The Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has suspended four students following a viral clip showing a violent altercation among them.
The incident, captured on mobile phone video, is said to have occurred on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, inside one of the university’s lecture halls during an afternoon session, when the class became chaotic and led to a fight.
At one point, one student is seen headbutting another several times.
In the footage circulating on social media, two students are seen attacking their peers in front of a full lecture hall as others watch in shock and confusion. A lecturer at the institution is also seen watching as the incident unfolded.
The victims, who appeared defenceless, were overpowered and beaten in full view of their classmates.
University Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo on Friday, March 27, confirmed that action had been taken against those involved.
“When I saw the video, I directed the officers concerned to take the necessary action. Given the seriousness of the incident, I advised that the students be suspended immediately to maintain security and order in the university, pending disciplinary action,” Prof Shibairo said.
He revealed that four students have been suspended over the incident, and a disciplinary hearing has been scheduled for April 1, 2026.
“As an institution of higher learning, we strongly condemn such acts of violence and hooliganism. We call upon all students to remain calm and uphold the spirit of comradeship, while observing the rules and regulations put in place to ensure their safety,” the Vice Chancellor said.
