Raila Junior questions leadership tone after Senator Osotsi assault

Orange Democratic Movement leader Oburu Odinga also strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a cowardly act that has no place in society and calling for action against those responsible.

A violent attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu has triggered strong political reactions, with Raila Junior joining voices calling for restraint and questioning the conduct of leaders in handling political differences.

Taking to his official X account on Thursday, April 9, 2026, Raila Junior condemned the incident and expressed concern over rising political hostility, saying leaders must rise above violence and act with responsibility.

“My deepest sympathies and wishes for a speedy recovery to Hon. Otsosi. I condemn in the strongest possible terms all forms of political violence. Leaders must rise above this and demonstrate integrity, maturity, and a genuine commitment to peace. Kenya deserves better,” Raila Junior stated.

His remarks come as the attack continues to draw attention from across the political divide, with leaders urging calm and accountability.

Orange Democratic Movement leader Oburu Odinga also strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a cowardly act that has no place in society and calling for action against those responsible.

Taking to his official X account on Thursday, April 9, 2026, Oburu expressed deep concern over the assault and extended his wishes for the senator’s recovery.

“It is with a heavy heart and profound concern that I have received news of the physical attack on the Senator of Vihiga County, Hon. Godfrey Osotsi. On behalf of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the entire leadership fraternity, I wish Senator Osotsi a full and speedy recovery,” Oburu said.

He added that the attack was unacceptable in any democratic setting and should not be tolerated.

Osotsi is currently receiving treatment at Karen Hospital after being assaulted by a group of armed individuals in Kisumu County on Wednesday, April 8.

According to Derick Luvega, Director of Communication at the Vihiga Senate Office, the senator had visited Acacia area for a routine personal activity before heading to Java restaurant, where he met a friend and interacted briefly with members of the public.

Shortly after, he was confronted by armed individuals who questioned him over his political alignment before the attack took place.

Luvega noted that the senator’s security detail acted with restraint during the incident to avoid opening fire in a crowded area and risking civilian lives.

“We strongly condemn this barbaric and cowardly act, which appears to have been premeditated and orchestrated,” the statement read in part.

“It is important to emphasise that this isolated incident should not, in any way, be used to tarnish the image of the people of Kisumu, who have consistently demonstrated warmth and hospitality, as evidenced by the Senator’s free movement and interactions prior to the attack.”
