General Duty police officers are set for a new look after President William Ruto officially launched their new uniform during a ceremony at the Kiganjo Police Training College in Nyeri County on Friday, August 28.
The new outfit replaces the navy-blue uniform currently worn by the officers and comes with sky-blue shirts, dark-blue trousers and berets. Female officers will also have dresses under the new uniform design introduced by the National Police Service (NPS).
Ruto unveiled the attire as he presided over the passing-out parade of 6,000 police constables who have completed their training at Kiganjo on Friday.
The uniform change had been announced earlier in the week by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who said the new attire would be introduced following feedback from officers during a public participation exercise.

According to Kanja, police officers rejected the navy-blue uniform during the exercise, paving the way for the return of the design that had earlier been approved.
“We have been using the deep blue uniform, but we are reverting to the one that was agreed upon. I must note that on Monday I must also wear the new uniform,” Kanja stated.
Kanja further announced that the new outfit would not be restricted to the officers attending the Kiganjo ceremony, saying all General Duty officers would gradually receive the new uniform within the next few weeks.
The IG said the change could also have an effect on the morale of officers as the service adopts the newly approved attire.
“In the next few weeks, we should be seeing the new uniform that was approved sometimes back, and I think this is also going to be a force multiplier,” Kanja added.
Despite the wider changes within the General Duty category, officers serving in the General Service Unit (GSU) and Administration Police Service (APS) will not be affected. They will continue with their respective uniforms.
The 6,000 constables passing out at Kiganjo were recruited during a nationwide exercise conducted on November 17, 2025. They have spent the subsequent months undergoing police training in preparation for deployment.
Following the pass-out ceremony, the newly trained officers will be posted to different police stations and NPS units across the country.
The introduction of the new uniform therefore marks a change in the appearance of General Duty officers, with the rollout expected to reach officers in the coming weeks.
