Volleyball: Stars to watch at weekend's Kenya Cup in Nairobi

The Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) announced the official approval of additional player registrations for the 2026 Kenya Cup Round of 16 matches scheduled for July 10-11 at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, with teams signing top local and international players.

Speaking to Radio Generation ahead of the Kenya Cup, which began on Friday, KVF Vice President Paul Bitok hailed the efforts made by several clubs that have attracted international and experienced stars such as Sharon Chepchumba and Pamela Adhiambo, among others.

"This is the crème de la crème of Kenyan volleyball ahead of the national finals next week at Kasarani," Bitok said.

"Clubs have really gone for it. The transfer window has been very active, and it's great to see top players in this championship," he added.

International opposite hitter Sharon Chepchumba, who last played the 2025/2026 season for Gence (Ganja Volley Club) in Azerbaijan, having previously featured for Hoa Chat Duc Giang in Vietnam and Turkish clubs Edremit Belediyesi, PAOK and Aris Thessaloniki, is now back at Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), a club she last featured for during the 2023/2024 season. She will be in action against Postbank in the Kenya Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have also brought in former Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) opposite hitter Pamela Owino Adhiambo, whose last stint was with HAOK Mladost in Croatia. Before that, she also plied her trade with LP Viesti in Finland. She is expected to feature in Saturday's clash against Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Postbank, who are relishing the chance to face seasoned veterans KCB, have added Naomi Naibei, Violet Makuto and Achan Ndeng to their roster, while other teams such as Aplus, KDF, Kenya Prisons, Prisons Nairobi and KPC have also strengthened their squads ahead of their matches.

KDF signed Joan Muindi, Prisons Nairobi brought in Gloria Nekesa, while Aplus were also busy in the transfer window, signing Sheila Chepngetich, Sheril Akinyi, Lynn Jeptum, Daisy Chebet and Abbigael Chebet. Veteran Meldina Sande has opted to join Kenya Prisons.

Postbank have signed Naomi Naibei, Violet Makuto and Achan Ndeng, while KPC have added Veronica A. Aluoch.

In the men's category, GSU have signed national team stalwarts Abiud Chirchir, Brian Melly, Nicholas Matui and Simion Kipkorir, while first-tier surprise package Chema VC crossed Kenya's borders to sign Ugandan duo Daudi Okello and Talemwa Willington, as well as Armstrong O. Ezeofor from Nigeria.

KAPU have signed Brian Ochieng and Briton Orwa Omondi, while first-tier finalists KPA have brought in Ugandan Marino Oboke and national team veteran Enock Mogeni. Kenya Prisons signed the duo of Elvas Makuto and Rollings Kisiangani, while Prisons Nairobi only added Deni Mathenge.

Eldowas, who have been making strides in the national league, have added Kipchumba Bernard to their squad, while Kenya Navy boosted their squad by signing Dennis Kipkoech, Kelvin Kibet, Collins Kipkoech, Dominic Kipkoech and Brian Rutto. Nairobi club Trailblazers were also busy in the transfer window, signing Derrick Kinyanjui, Raymond Okeyo and Felix Oluoch.
