Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli has renewed calls for National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to position himself for the presidency in 2032, saying his leadership experience gives him a strong footing to take over from President William Ruto.
Wakoli made the remarks during a meeting of Bungoma stakeholders at Mabanga FTC, where he presented Wetang’ula as a leader capable of carrying Western Kenya’s political ambitions to the State House.
“You are a very selfless man, a gifted leader and a dedicated statesman, and we believe that Kenya will be safest in your hands after President Ruto,” he said.
Wakoli pointed to Wetang’ula’s position as the country’s third-in-command, saying this placed him in a favourable position to lead the region’s efforts to secure the presidency after Ruto.
The fresh endorsement comes as leaders in Bungoma continue to rally around Wetang’ula, who has previously been mentioned as a potential presidential contender beyond the 2027 election.
The meeting also gave residents, business leaders and opinion shapers an opportunity to raise issues affecting the county, including the need to speed up the upgrading of Bungoma Town.
Residents further called for the completion of development projects that are already under way, as local leaders pushed for faster delivery of projects across the county.
Wetang’ula said Bungoma had benefited from the government’s development efforts and argued that the county stood to gain more by maintaining the current political direction.
“We have gained a lot as Bungoma County, and we stand to gain even more by maintaining the current development trajectory by having this Government re-elected under President Ruto,” said Wetang'ula.
The Speaker also used the occasion to reconnect with his past, recalling his childhood years growing up around Bungoma Town and meeting some of his former friends from his childhood and school days.
Local county assembly leaders and representatives of community groups also attended the meeting, which brought together various stakeholders to discuss issues affecting Bungoma and the wider country.
