Dr. Victoria Mutiso murder probe: Court detains mother, son for 21 days

A Nairobi court has granted detectives 21 more days to investigate the murder of clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, ordering two key suspects- a mother and her son- to remain in custody after finding that their release could compromise the case.

The court ruled that Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her son Chris Mulwa should continue to be held separately, citing concerns that they could interfere with witnesses if released before investigations are complete. Rose will remain at Kileleshwa Police Station, while Chris will be detained at Kilimani Police Station.

In its ruling, the court said the prosecution had presented sufficient grounds to justify the continued detention, pointing to evidence that Dr Mutiso had reported threats against her life before she was killed. The magistrate held that the reported intimidation, together with the fatal shooting, raised legitimate concerns that warranted further investigations without the suspects being released.

Although prosecutors had sought to detain the pair for 30 days, the court instead approved a 21-day custodial period, giving investigators three additional weeks to complete inquiries.

Rose and Chris were arrested in Karen last Thursday during what detectives described as an intelligence-led operation.

Investigators told the court that Dr Mutiso had previously reported being followed and threatened by two men riding a motorcycle in separate incidents before her death.

According to an affidavit, one of those incidents occurred on July 7, 2026, when Dr Mutiso was driving near Junction Mall along Ngong Road. She alleged that two men on a motorcycle confronted her and brandished a firearm before she managed to escape.

The incident was reported at Kilimani Police Station, where she also informed investigators and her husband that she recognised the motorcycle's passenger as Chris Mulwa.

The prosecution further told the court that Rose Mbithe Mulwa was previously married to Dr Mutiso's husband, Prof David Musyimi Ndetei. The marriage ended in divorce in 2001 after the couple had four children, including Chris Mulwa.

Detectives are also investigating whether Dr Mutiso's killing could be linked to the September 2025 murder of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu. Mbobu had acted for Prof Ndetei in a protracted legal dispute involving matrimonial property reportedly valued at billions of shillings.
