KURA announces three-hour traffic disruption on Outer Ring road

Motorists using Nairobi’s Outer Ring Road will face a three-hour disruption on Saturday, September 5, as authorities temporarily restrict traffic to allow the removal of a gantry along the busy route.

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) said the works will run from noon to 3pm, with the road completely closed for one hour between 1pm and 2pm to give crews time to safely remove the gantry.

In a traffic advisory issued on Wednesday, KURA said traffic would be allowed through the affected section at reduced speeds before and after the full closure.

“Motorists are informed of a partial closure of Outer Ring Road on Saturday, 5th September 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., to facilitate removal of a gantry at the location indicated in the attached sketch,” the authority said in a statement.

According to the traffic plan, motorists will first be allowed to use the road under restricted-speed conditions between noon and 1pm as machinery and other equipment are positioned at the work site.

Traffic will then be stopped completely from 1pm to 2pm to allow the gantry to be removed.

The road will be reopened from 2pm, but motorists will continue to face restricted speeds until 3pm as crews remove machinery and clear the work area.

The affected section is around the Juja Road, Jogoo Road and Airport North Road intersections, according to the traffic management plan issued by the authority.

KURA has urged motorists to exercise caution and make arrangements for possible delays during the three-hour period.

The authority also apologised to road users for the temporary disruption caused by the works.

“We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” KURA said.

Outer Ring Road is a key transport route in Nairobi, linking several busy areas of the city and connecting motorists to major roads such as Thika Road, Jogoo Road, Juja Road and Airport North Road.

The road is heavily used by commuters travelling between the eastern and northeastern parts of the capital, including Umoja, Donholm, Kariobangi, Dandora and Kayole.

It also serves motorists travelling towards the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport corridor, making the affected section an important route for public transport vehicles, private motorists and commercial traffic.

Motorists using the road on Saturday are therefore expected to experience delays during the planned works, particularly during the one-hour full closure between 1pm and 2pm.
