KURA announces partial closure of Outer Ring Road for gantry removal on Saturday

A section of Nairobi’s Outer Ring Road will be temporarily closed on Saturday, August 8, as the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) carries out the removal of a road gantry, with motorists advised to prepare for traffic disruptions during the three-hour exercise.

In a traffic advisory issued on Thursday, KURA said the partial closure will be in place from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to allow the safe dismantling and removal of the gantry on the southern side of Outer Ring Road near the Airport North Road junction.

“Motorists are informed of a partial closure of Outer Ring Road on Saturday, 8th August 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., to facilitate removal of a gantry at the location indicated in the attached sketch,” the authority said.

According to KURA, the affected stretch lies between the Airport North Road interchange and the nearby Ngong River crossing, where the gantry is located. The accompanying traffic management plan shows that the work area has been marked just north of the Airport North Road junction, with a temporary road block to create a safe working space for the operation.

Despite the closure, traffic along the larger Outer Ring Road corridor, including roads connecting to Jogoo Road, Manyanja Road, Juja Road and Thika Road, will continue moving. However, motorists approaching the work zone have been advised to expect slower traffic and possible delays as vehicles are guided around the operation.

KURA said the exercise will be carried out in three stages to reduce disruption. The first phase, between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., will involve positioning machinery at the site, with only minor interruptions expected as motorists pass through the area at reduced speeds.

The second phase, scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., will involve the actual removal of the gantry. During this period, the affected section of the road will be fully closed to allow the work to be completed safely.

The final phase will run from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., when contractors will remove equipment from the site and reopen the road. Drivers will still be required to slow down as normal traffic flow is gradually restored.

“We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” the authority apologized.

KURA has urged motorists to cooperate with traffic marshals, obey road signs and use alternative routes where necessary to help ease movement during the planned operation.
