National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged leaders to take responsibility in supporting others and to live purposeful lives, reminding them that death can come at any time.
Speaking during the burial of the late MP Denar Joseph Hamisi in Mazeras, Kilifi County, on Saturday, December 13, 2025, Speaker Wetang’ula said leaders must stand with one another, especially during difficult moments, noting that life is unpredictable.
“Today you are alive, tomorrow you are not. God has hidden the day of death from us. You can sit on your seat or on the pulpit and die the next minute,” he said.
The Speaker described the late lawmaker as dependable and a true friend to many, including himself.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi eulogised Denar as a principled and intelligent leader who valued justice and integrity. He recalled working with him when Denar served as a commissioner at the Electoral Commission of Kenya during the delayed announcement of Kingi’s victory as Magarini MP.
“All that has been said about Denar is true. I knew him many years ago when he was a commissioner at the ECK,” Kingi said.
He urged leaders and residents to uphold the legacy of the late MP, noting that Denar served on the National Assembly Lands Committee and was driven by a desire to resolve land challenges affecting his constituents.
Deputy Majority Leader and Kilifi North MP Owen Baya remembered the late legislator as a man of deep faith, generosity and selflessness.
“He believed that nothing was impossible. He helped many people and never wanted recognition for it,” Baya said.
Other Members of Parliament present described Denar as humble, soft-spoken and a trusted financial adviser.
His widow, Eileen Mukhebi Denar, described her husband as a rare individual whose presence brought calm and reassurance to his family.
“Tui was one in a gazillion. When he walked into a room, he didn’t just enter; he arrived. Whenever a problem arose, we all felt at ease the moment he appeared because we knew everything would be sorted,” she said.
Their son, TJ, urged leaders to continue with his father’s good deeds.
The defunct ANC party, represented by Kelvin Lunani, described the late MP as reliable, principled and a pillar of the Kenya Kwanza government.
The church remembered Denar as a devoted member of Mazeras Baptist Church who championed development projects, including the construction of a new church building that had reached the roofing stage.
“The church has lost a very committed member. He served God faithfully and supported church activities,” said Baptist Church Kenya chairperson Samuel Boba Mngong’o.
His sisters praised him for his friendly nature, wide network and role as a strategic adviser to the family.
“You have left us with genuine friends who have stood with us and comforted our family since your passing,” said his sister, Bertha.
