State accelerates Wajir infrastructure projects ahead of Madaraka Day

PS Raymond Omollo said the Wajir Stadium project has already created employment for more than 400 people daily and is expected to reach substantial completion by mid-May.

Senior national government officials on Thursday visited Wajir County to assess progress on major infrastructure projects ahead of the upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations that will be hosted in the county.

The delegation, comprising Principal Secretaries from the State Departments for Internal Security, Defence, and Transport, was received by Deputy Governor Ahmed Muhumed Abdi and other county officials.

Dr. Raymond Omollo, the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, said the facility is about 10 percent complete.

He said contractors are working round-the-clock to ensure it is ready before the national celebrations.

“Our commitment is to deliver a memorable Madaraka Day in Wajir, just like across the country.”

PS Raymond Omollo said the stadium project has already created employment for more than 400 people daily and is expected to reach substantial completion by mid-May.

During the visit, the team inspected the ongoing expansion and rehabilitation works at Wajir International Airport, which include upgrades to the terminal building, taxiway and runway.

Teresia Mbaika, the Principal Secretary, State Department for Aviation and Aerospace Development, said the improvements will help separate military and civilian operations at the airport, easing air transport into and out of the region.

“We have the resources, the personnel, and everything required to ensure this project is completed on time ahead of Madaraka Day,” she said.

“Together with my colleagues, we will work closely to ensure all the components of this project are completed on time,” she added.

“We have the resources, the personnel, and everything required to ensure this project is completed on time ahead of Madaraka Day.”

The delegation also toured the stadium currently under construction in Wajir, where President William Ruto recently launched the project.

In addition, the team inspected the county commissioner’s residence, which is set to undergo renovations to host the presidential luncheon during the Madaraka Day festivities.

Other supporting works planned include improvements to access roads, installation of street lighting, and upgrades to power and water supply to support the large number of visitors expected during the celebrations.

Wajir Deputy Governor Ahmed Muhumed Abdi welcomed the national government’s investment in the county.

The deputy Governor noted that hosting the celebrations will bring lasting development benefits to the region.

“Hosting the President in Wajir is historic and monumental. We appreciate the National Government’s support, and we’re committed to engaging the community to make these projects a success.”

He said the county government will support community engagement and coordination to ensure the projects are delivered on time and the celebrations are successfully hosted.

“As a county, we sincerely appreciate the President and the national government for honoring their commitments and ensuring that these transformative projects are progressing steadily,” he said.

“These projects bring real benefits—power, roads, and street lighting.”
