The United Kingdom has appointed Matt Baugh as its new High Commissioner to the Republic of Kenya, marking a transition in diplomatic leadership between the two countries.

Baugh will succeed Neil Wigan, who has been reassigned to another role within the Diplomatic Service.
According to an official announcement, Baugh is expected to take up his new post in April 2026, continuing the United Kingdom’s long-standing diplomatic engagement with Kenya.

The transition comes at a time when bilateral relations between the two nations remain focused on trade, security cooperation, climate action, and development partnerships.

In a brief statement confirming the appointment, the UK government noted the change in leadership, stating that “Mr Matt Baugh OBE has been appointed British High Commissioner to the Republic of Kenya in succession to Mr Neil Wigan OBE.”

The statement added that Wigan “has taken up another Diplomatic Service appointment.”

Baugh brings extensive diplomatic experience to the role, having served in various senior positions within the UK’s foreign service. His appointment signals continuity in the UK’s strategic priorities in Kenya, a key partner in East Africa.

Outgoing High Commissioner Wigan has served in Nairobi during a period of deepening UK-Kenya ties, including strengthened economic cooperation and increased British investment in the region. His tenure also coincided with enhanced collaboration on regional security and counterterrorism efforts.

The High Commissioner acts as the UK government’s principal diplomatic representative in Kenya, engaging with Kenyan authorities, civil society, and the private sector.

The office also plays a critical role in advancing UK foreign policy objectives, including promoting economic growth, tackling climate change, and supporting regional stability.

Baugh’s arrival in April will mark the beginning of a new chapter in UK-Kenya relations, with expectations that he will build on the foundation laid by his predecessor.

As diplomatic priorities evolve, his leadership is likely to focus on sustaining momentum in key areas of cooperation while exploring new opportunities for partnership.
The transition reflects routine changes within the UK Diplomatic Service, aimed at ensuring continuity and renewal in its global network of missions.
