Police arrest suspected arms trafficker, recover firearms and ammunition in Kitui

A suspected high-profile arms trafficker has been arrested in Kitui County after police intercepted a vehicle allegedly transporting illegal firearms and ammunition to Nairobi, in an operation investigators say has disrupted a criminal supply chain linked to organised crime.

The suspect was arrested on Wednesday at the Kanyonyo Vehicle Checkpoint during an intelligence-led operation targeting illegal firearms trafficking, according to the National Police Service (NPS).

Police said officers conducted a targeted search of the suspect's vehicle and recovered several firearms together with a large cache of ammunition. However, authorities did not immediately reveal the number or type of weapons seized.

Early investigations have identified the suspect as a key figure in an illegal weapons network believed to be supplying firearms and ammunition across several regions, including Nairobi.

According to the NPS, detectives suspect the individual has been involved in the "illicit sale, supply, and distribution of illegal firearms and ammunition across multiple regions."

Police said the arrest has dealt a major blow to organised crime by cutting off a route that investigators believe was being used to move illegal weapons into the capital.

Authorities said the operation had "disrupted a significant criminal supply chain intended to fuel criminal activity within the capital city and its environs."

The suspect remains in police custody as detectives continue investigations to identify and arrest other people believed to be part of the wider network behind the illegal firearms trade.

"The suspect is currently in police custody and is assisting detectives with ongoing investigations to uncover his wider network of suppliers and buyers. He is due to be arraigned in court to face the relevant charges," the statement said.

Police said the ongoing investigations are aimed at dismantling the entire network involved in the supply and distribution of illegal firearms.

The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to fighting organised crime and preventing illegal weapons from falling into the hands of criminal groups.

"The National Police Service reiterates its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Kenyans, residents, and visitors," it said.

The service also appealed to members of the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities through the nearest police station or its emergency reporting channels as investigations continue.
