Emergency teams are responding to a mass casualty incident after a petrol tanker exploded near Paul Boit Secondary School along the Eldoret-Turbo road.
Several people are feared dead, with reports indicating some residents had gathered to scoop fuel at the scene.
The Kenya Red Cross said in a statement on Thursday that its teams, police, and other emergency workers were responding to the incident.
"Kenya Red Cross is on the ground responding in collaboration with Kenya Police and firefighters. We urge motorists to avoid the area to allow emergency response teams unhindered access," it said.
