The “sponyo” name, drawn from the word “sponsor”, has been used by President William Ruto and his allies in reference to allegations that Uhuru is financing or supporting opposition political activities.
The decision was reached by the Parliamentary Service Commission, chaired by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, with a report on the selection process tabled before Parliament on September 15.

The six Bills are the Tertiary Education, Placement and Funding Bill, 2026; Basic Education Bill, 2026; Kenya National Educational Assessments Council Bill, 2026; Pre-Service Education and In-Service Training Bill, 2026; Kenya National Qualifications Framework (Amendment) Bill, 2026; and Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026
The Majority Leader said political parties and leaders should also change how they engage with voters, arguing that elections should provide an opportunity for Kenyans to compare different plans rather than witness clashes between supporters.
Ichung’wah urged politicians to resist the urge to dictate how the commission operates, saying their role should be limited to offering direction where necessary while allowing the electoral agency to make its own decisions.
The Statutory Instruments (Amendment) Bill (Senate Bill No 10 of 2024) seeks to give citizens a formal channel to petition Parliament when public bodies do not prepare the rules needed to give effect to legislation within the required timelines.
