CA updates mobile phone standards to boost safety and service quality

The Communications Authority of Kenya has issued updated technical specifications for mobile phones, setting safety and quality standards for all devices sold and used in the country.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has unveiled updated technical standards for mobile phones, setting clear requirements for devices sold and used across the country. The notice, released on March 24, 2026, aims to ensure that all mobile phones comply with safety, radiation, electromagnetic compatibility, and environmental standards while improving both Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) for consumers.

As the regulator of Kenya’s ICT sector—which includes telecommunications, cyber security, e-commerce, broadcasting, and postal services—CA also manages numbering and frequency spectrum resources and oversees the Universal Service Fund (USF). Part of its role is to safeguard consumer interests and standardize telecommunication equipment to meet national and international benchmarks.

Through the Type Approval process, the Authority examines devices to verify their safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), radiation emissions, and environmental impact before they are allowed on the market.

“The Authority has developed Technical Specifications for use during the type approval process for mobile cellular devices meant for sale and use in Kenya,” the notice stated.

The new specifications are intended for all ICT stakeholders, including mobile phone vendors, local assemblers, and manufacturers. They outline the exact requirements devices must meet to ensure users are not exposed to substandard or unsafe products.

CA is urging all stakeholders to review the full specifications available on its website and ensure compliance before importing, assembling, or distributing mobile devices. The Authority said this move is designed to foster a safer, higher-quality mobile technology ecosystem across Kenya.

David Mugonyi, EBS, Director General/CEO of the Communications Authority, highlighted the importance of adherence to the standards, noting that they will strengthen consumer protection and improve service delivery across the country.

To support compliance, CA’s regional offices in Eldoret, Mombasa, Nyeri, and Kisumu are available to guide local ICT stakeholders on meeting the updated requirements.

By enforcing these technical standards, the Communications Authority of Kenya is reaffirming its commitment to consumer safety, environmental responsibility, and the promotion of high-quality telecommunication services nationwide.
