US Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, have welcomed their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance.
The couple announced the birth in a joint statement shared on X on Sunday, saying both mother and baby were healthy following the delivery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
The birth marks the first time in modern US history that a sitting vice president has welcomed a child while in office.
"We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother."
The Vice President and the Second Lady also thanked the medical staff who cared for the family during the birth and Usha Vance's recovery.
JD and Usha Vance have been married since 2014 and are already parents to three children: sons Ewan, aged nine, and Vivek, six, as well as their four-year-old daughter, Mirabel.
The birth marks a rare milestone in American political history. According to historical records cited by CBS News, it is the first time in the modern era that a sitting US vice president and second lady have welcomed a child while serving in office.
The last known instance occurred more than a century and a half ago when Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife, Ellen, welcomed their son, Schuyler Colfax III, in 1870 during the administration of President Ulysses S. Grant.
The arrival of the couple's fourth child also follows personal reflections shared by the vice president in his recently published book, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, in which he described conversations with his wife about expanding their family.
Vance wrote that although he had encouraged the idea of having another child for several years, Usha had initially been reluctant because of the increased public attention that came with the family's move into national office.
According to the book, her perspective evolved following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The Vances travelled to Arizona after Kirk was fatally shot and attended his funeral, where conversations with his widow left a lasting impression.
"Something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy. One life was stolen from us, but another was given."
Usha Vance later reflected on the experience during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, describing comments made by Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow, as deeply meaningful.
"I think I had already started to open my mind to the possibility. I wouldn't say that this was, for me in any way, the decisive factor. But it came in the middle of a conversation that we were already having."
The birth of Alec Neel Vance marks a significant personal milestone for the second family while adding a unique chapter to the history of the US vice presidency.
