A protected witness on Tuesday told the High Court in Kibera that they were unknowingly paid Sh50,000 to trail the vehicle of former Kasipul MP Charles Ong'ondo Were shortly before he was shot dead on April 30, 2025.
Testifying under the pseudonym KAV under the Witness Protection Programme, the witness said they were hired for what they believed was a routine motorcycle transport assignment after receiving instructions from a known contact.
The witness told the court they were first directed to Huruma before the meeting point was changed to Jacaranda, where they met a man who handed them an Airtel SIM card for communication and promised them Sh50,000 for the assignment.
KAV testified that they ferried the man to a sports facility in Buruburu before being instructed to trail a white vehicle. After stopping at a petrol station along Jogoo Road, they proceeded to Nairobi's CBD, where they waited for several hours.
Later that evening, the passenger instructed the witness to follow a different white vehicle before alighting at a designated location.
"Moments later, I heard gunshots before the individual returned, boarded the motorcycle and instructed me to ride to another location," the witness said.
The witness said they only realised they had been involved in the operation after being told to watch television news, where they recognised the vehicle they had been following as the one carrying the slain legislator.
KAV further testified that they were paid as agreed the following day, after which the Airtel SIM card used during the assignment was destroyed and replaced with another one.
The Director of Public Prosecutions presented the protected witness before Justice Diana Kavedza as the murder trial continues.
The case will resume on July 16, 2026.
