Emmanuel Wanyonyi produced a career-defining performance in Monaco after breaking the men's 1000m world record, ending a mark that had stood untouched for 27 years and giving Kenya another memorable moment on the global athletics stage.
The Kenyan middle-distance runner stormed to victory in 2:11.83, lowering the previous world record of 2:11.96 that had been set by fellow Kenyan Noah Ngeny.
The brilliant run also saw Wanyonyi become only the second athlete in history to cover the distance in under two minutes and 12 seconds.
The race remained competitive throughout, with Britain's Jake Wightman staying close to Wanyonyi before the Kenyan pulled away in the closing metres. Wightman finished second in 2:12.77, a performance that places him fourth on the all-time list.
Wanyonyi's record-breaking victory capped an outstanding evening at the Monaco Diamond League and marked another major milestone in his rapidly growing career. By ending Ngeny's long reign as world record holder, the Kenyan added another historic achievement to his name with a performance that will be remembered for years to come.
