Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has affirmed his willingness to hand over the Jubilee Party chairmanship, saying the High Court ruling has provided clarity on the process that had been delayed by an internal dispute.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the Office of the 4th President said Uhuru had taken note of the ruling by Justice Lawrence Mugambi concerning Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act, which guides the transition of retired presidents from formal political party leadership.
The former President welcomed the court’s guidance, saying it had cleared the way for the long-delayed handover of the Jubilee Party chairmanship.
“In regard to the long-delayed handover of the Party chairmanship, the Office clarifies that this process was not stalled by reluctance, but by a contested internal dispute that required legal clarity,” the statement said. The office said the court ruling had now provided a clear path for the leadership transition within the party.
“With the court’s guidance, that path is now clear,” the statement added.
Uhuru has further committed to ensuring that the handover is completed in accordance with the law and Jubilee Party’s governing constitution.
“The former President affirms his absolute willingness to see the handover completed openly, lawfully, and in strict accordance with the Party’s constitution,” the statement said.
The former President’s position signals readiness to bring to an end the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the leadership of the party, which he has chaired since its formation.
His office said the handover should now proceed without further obstruction, allowing Jubilee to move into a new phase under the next generation of leadership.
“He looks forward to the Party’s processes moving forward without hindrance,” the statement said.
The former President also welcomed what his office described as a new chapter for Jubilee, anchored on the rule of law and the party’s constitution. “Uhuru Kenyatta welcomes this new chapter for Jubilee, built on the rule of law, guided by the Party’s constitution, and carried forward by the next generation of leadership,” the statement said.
The statement sought to clarify that the delay in the transfer of the chairmanship had been linked to a contested internal process rather than Uhuru’s unwillingness to relinquish the position.
The High Court ruling is therefore expected to provide the legal framework needed to complete the transition and settle the leadership question within Jubilee.
Uhuru’s office reiterated that the former President respects the judiciary and views the ruling as part of Kenya’s democratic development. The statement was issued by Kanze Dena-Mararo, Secretary of Communications in the Office of the 4th President of the Republic of Kenya.
The focus now shifts to the implementation of the ruling and completion of the Jubilee chairmanship handover, with Uhuru indicating that he is ready for the process to proceed openly and in accordance with the party’s constitution.
