Kalonzo has what it takes to lead Kenya, Wiper’s Ndegwa Njiru says

Wiper Party spokesperson and lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has declared that party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is ready to take over as Kenya’s next president, as opposition leaders work to build a political alliance capable of challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a Radio Generation interview on Wednesday, Njiru said Kalonzo has the experience, political consistency and character needed to lead the country, positioning the Wiper leader as a key figure in the opposition’s efforts to find an alternative to the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“The President of the Republic of Kenya, Rais awamu ya sita, Dr. Kalonzo Musyoka is ready and equal to the task.”

Njiru’s remarks come as opposition parties and political leaders continue discussions on how to unite ahead of the 2027 election, with Kalonzo, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Jubilee Deputy Leader Fred Matiang’i, PLP Leader Martha Karua and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa among those associated with efforts to form a broader political alliance.

Wiper has continued to present Kalonzo as its preferred presidential candidate, while other parties and political formations seek a place in the emerging opposition arrangement.

The eventual coalition is expected to be shaped by negotiations over who will lead the alliance, the support different leaders command in various regions and how political positions will be shared.

Njiru said Kalonzo’s ability to remain committed to a political cause, even when faced with difficult circumstances, was one of the qualities that made him suitable for the presidency.

He pointed to Kalonzo’s long political association with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saying the Wiper leader remained loyal to their partnership for 15 years, despite not being chosen as Raila’s running mate in the 2022 presidential election.

“For the short time I have known him,(Kalonzo) he's a man who believes in a course, and if he chooses a course, he sticks to it. He stuck with the late Raila Odinga for 15 years.”

According to Njiru, Kalonzo has continued to uphold what he described as Raila’s political philosophy even after the former Prime Minister’s death, which he presented as a sign of the Wiper leader’s consistency and loyalty.

The lawyer argued that such qualities should be part of the national discussion as Kenyans consider the leaders seeking to become president in 2027.

Njiru further said the quality of leadership cannot be determined by constitutional safeguards and laws alone, arguing that the people entrusted with power also play a major role in shaping how the country is governed.

He compared the administrations of former presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki, saying their different leadership styles produced different results despite the country operating within the same constitutional framework.

The Wiper spokesperson also pointed to Kalonzo’s record in public service, saying it showed a leader who, in his view, placed public interest ahead of personal benefit.

Njiru cited the Tseikuru road project during Kalonzo’s time as Vice-President as an example of what he described as his selfless approach to public service.

He said Kalonzo rejected a proposal to have the road construction begin near his home and instead directed that the project start from Mwingi upwards, arguing that this would allow public services to reach a wider section of the community.

Njiru also defended Kalonzo’s integrity record, saying the Wiper leader had never faced a corruption charge throughout his long career in public service.

“There is no charge sheet that has ever been generated in the Republic of Kenya charging His Excellency Kalonzo Musyoka with a corruption case. Never, he has never ever been.”

He said Kalonzo’s decades of experience in public service should be taken into account as Kenyans assess the leaders seeking the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

The opposition is now facing the task of bringing together several political interests and personalities under one campaign as it seeks to challenge Ruto’s administration.

At the same time, the ruling side is preparing to defend its position and seek a second term in office, setting the stage for an increasingly competitive political contest ahead of 2027.

Njiru maintained that Kalonzo’s experience, consistency and character put him in a position to lead the country, reinforcing Wiper’s push to place its party leader at the centre of the opposition’s presidential campaign.
