KeNHA announces one-month partial closure of Waiyaki Way near GTC

Thousands of motorists using Waiyaki Way are expected to face traffic delays for the next one month after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the partial closure of a section of the busy road to allow maintenance works.

In a traffic advisory issued on Friday, July 24, KeNHA said the Mombasa-bound lanes between the Global Trade Centre (GTC) and Villa Rosa Kempinski will be partially closed from Friday, July 31, 2026, to Monday, August 31, 2026.

The authority said the temporary closure is necessary to facilitate maintenance works on the affected stretch, with motorists expected to use the remaining open lanes throughout the construction period.

The disruption is expected to affect thousands of commuters travelling along one of Nairobi's busiest transport corridors, particularly those heading to and from Westlands, Parklands and several neighbouring estates.

Motorists from Kangemi, Mountain View, Kitisuru, Loresho, Kyuna, Spring Valley, Highridge, Muthangari, Lower Kabete and parts of Riverside are also expected to experience delays as Waiyaki Way serves as a key route connecting these areas to the city centre.

The closure is also likely to affect motorists travelling along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, which relies on Waiyaki Way as the main gateway linking Nairobi to the Rift Valley region.

KeNHA urged motorists to plan their journeys in advance and consider alternative routes to help reduce congestion during the month-long exercise.

"All motorists intending to use Waiyaki Way during this period will utilise the unclosed sections of this road as well as consider using alternative routes to ensure minimal traffic disruption," the notice stated.

The authority also appealed to drivers to cooperate with officers who will be deployed to manage traffic along the affected section.

"Motorists are further advised to follow the proposed traffic management plan as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site," the Authority announced.

Traffic marshals and police officers are expected to be stationed along the corridor to guide motorists and ensure the smooth flow of traffic while the works continue.

The maintenance works are part of KeNHA's ongoing Sh4.5 billion project aimed at improving road capacity and upgrading roads linking Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to ABC Place in Westlands.

The project is being implemented by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and seeks to restore and modernise sections of the lower road network that were affected during the construction of the Nairobi Expressway.

According to KeNHA, the broader upgrade includes drainage improvements, recarpeting of highways, construction of pedestrian walkways, installation of improved street lighting, laying of new cabro pavements and landscaping through flower planting.

The authority has advised road users to remain patient throughout the construction period and follow directions issued on site to help minimise delays and enhance safety for both motorists and workers.
