The Republic of Angola has conferred a posthumous honour on Kenya’s founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, during Angola’s 50th Anniversary of National Independence celebrations.

In a statement, the Office of the Fourth President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, said the award, presented under the Honour Class, was a significant recognition of Mzee Kenyatta’s legacy as a Pan-Africanist leader who championed unity and self-determination across the continent.

The decoration ceremony took place on Thursday, November 6, 2025, in Luanda, where the honour was received on behalf of the Kenyatta family by Muhoho Kenyatta.

The process was facilitated by Kenya’s Ambassador to Angola, Joyce Khasimwa M’maitsi.

“The Office of the Fourth President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, wishes to express its profound gratitude to His Excellency President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, the Government, and the people of the Republic of Angola for the posthumous honour bestowed upon Kenya’s Founding Father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta,” the statement read.

Muhoho Kenyatta described the recognition as a reaffirmation of the historical bonds and shared liberation struggles between Kenya and Angola.

“This prestigious award serves as a powerful reminder of the Pan-African ideals that Mzee Jomo Kenyatta championed — a vision of a united, free, and self-determined Africa. His solidarity with Angola’s liberation movement was rooted in the unwavering belief that the destiny of all African nations is interconnected,” he stated.

The recognition, which also extended to other notable African figures, highlighted Angola’s appreciation of continental leaders who contributed to Africa’s liberation and post-colonial unity.

According to the statement, the honour also underscores the long-standing friendship between Kenya and Angola, built on mutual respect, shared history, and the ideals of African independence.

“The gesture is seen not merely as an honour to an individual, but as a reaffirmation of the deep, historical bonds and shared struggle for liberation between Kenya and Angola,” the statement added.

The Office of the Fourth President extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of Angola on their Golden Jubilee, wishing them continued peace and prosperity in their national development journey.
