Kiraitu admitted the 2022 defeat was a heavy blow that almost led him into depression.

After decades in public service, former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has decided to step away from active politics, saying he now wants to focus on guiding others and encouraging happiness in workplaces.

He made the announcement on Tuesday at Laikipia University, where he received an honorary doctorate in recognition of his leadership and service to the nation.

Speaking to friends and family during the ceremony, Kiraitu said that after more than thirty years in political life, it was time to move on.

“I have learnt my lessons,” he said, reflecting on a career that began in 1992 when he first entered Parliament. Over the years, he served as a Member of Parliament, held cabinet positions under the late President Mwai Kibaki, became Meru Senator in 2013, and won the governorship in 2017. He lost the seat in 2022 to Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Kiraitu admitted the 2022 defeat was a heavy blow that almost led him into depression.

"Initially, after losing the elections, I was in shock, disbelief, and I actually got very sad. I also got depressed after some time, and because people were around me crying, they had also lost, so I decided to take a break from all that," he said.

He described the period after leaving office as extremely difficult, calling politics “a place I would not want to go back to.” Recovery, he said, came through nine months of counselling and structured lessons in personal growth and happiness.

“This experience gave me a new perspective on life,” he said. “Now, I want to share that perspective with others and help people find joy in their professional and personal lives.”

Kiraitu explained that he will remain involved in politics at a low-profile level, offering advice rather than contesting any positions. His wife, Priscillah Murungi, welcomed the decision, saying it was the right time for him to explore other interests and enjoy a more balanced life outside political pressures.
