The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, left part of the facility damaged but did not result in injuries or loss of life.

Calm has returned to Thika Children’s Rescue Centre in Kiambu County after a fire tore through one of its dormitories, with the government confirming that all 63 boys and members of staff escaped unharmed.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, left part of the facility damaged but did not result in injuries or loss of life.

The State Department for Children Services said the affected dormitory housed boys who have lived at the centre for years under institutional care.

“All children and staff were safely evacuated, and immediate measures were taken to secure their safety and well-being,” the statement said.

Emergency teams moved quickly to contain the blaze before it could spread to other sections of the rescue centre.

Authorities credited the Kenya Army Barracks in Thika and the County Government of Kiambu for their prompt support, saying their joint efforts helped limit destruction.

Following the incident, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Children Services Carren Ageng’o, visited the scene.

She was accompanied by Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a and security officials to inspect the extent of the damage and guide the next steps.

"Arrangements are ongoing to provide the affected children with alternative safe accommodation and essential supplies to ensure continuity of care and minimal disruption to their daily routines, including schooling and psychosocial support," the statement added.

Officials said temporary housing plans are already in motion to make sure the boys continue with school and daily activities without interruption.

The government also assured that food, clothing, and other basic needs will be provided as recovery efforts begin.

At the same time, relevant agencies have opened investigations to establish what sparked the fire. Authorities indicated that further details will be shared once the findings are ready.

The Ministry emphasized that the welfare and protection of children living in care facilities remain a top concern.

It noted that cooperation between national security teams and county officials was key in avoiding casualties.

Support measures will remain in place as the centre works toward resuming full services. The State reiterated its commitment to children under institutional care, stating that “the Government remains fully committed to safeguarding the welfare, safety, and rights of all children under institutional care.”
