President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid faces little danger from the current opposition, South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro has said, but singled out Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the one politician capable of giving the ruling side some concern.
Osoro said Kalonzo’s years in politics and his ability to bring together voters in the Kamba region set him apart from other leaders within the United Opposition.
Speaking during an interview with Herman Manyora on Friday, August 7, 2026, the National Assembly Minority Whip said Kalonzo had demonstrated political staying power through his participation in several election contests.
“The only politician you can take seriously when it comes to the opposition is Kalonzo Musyoka. He is an experienced politician and has been around for a while. He has been able to solidify the Kamba votes into one block,” Osoro said.
The MP, however, said Kalonzo’s political influence had not grown to the national level despite his long career.
According to Osoro, the Wiper leader has remained heavily dependent on the Kamba vote, making it difficult for him to emerge as a strong nationwide opposition figure.
Osoro contrasted Kalonzo’s position with that of other leaders in the United Opposition, whom he said had not demonstrated the same ability to command a solid voting bloc.
The legislator’s assessment comes as political leaders begin laying the groundwork for the 2027 General Election, with opposition figures seeking to build a common platform against Ruto.
Despite acknowledging Kalonzo’s political strength, Osoro expressed confidence that Ruto would comfortably retain the presidency.
He dismissed growing calls for a one-term presidency, commonly pushed through the “Wantam” slogan, as well as other efforts aimed at building an anti-government wave ahead of the election.
Osoro argued that none of the opposition leaders currently positioning themselves for 2027 had reached the level of political threat once presented by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“2027 is the easiest election for Ruto to win. The only person who used to pose danger to us was Raila Odinga, but now he is not there.”
The South Mugirango MP also weighed in on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, another prominent figure in the opposition camp.
Osoro said Gachagua’s time in government meant the ruling side was already familiar with his political approach and therefore did not consider him a major threat.
He maintained that Kalonzo remained the most notable figure among the opposition leaders, even as he questioned whether the Wiper chief could translate his strong support in the Kamba region into a broader national following.
For Osoro, the opposition’s current political line-up does not match the challenge previously posed by Raila, leaving Kalonzo as the standout figure but with a major task of expanding his reach beyond his traditional support base.
