A fresh round of appointments has brought new faces and renewed leadership terms to several State boards and councils, with President William Ruto and Cabinet Secretaries naming officials to institutions overseeing key sectors of the economy.
The changes, contained in gazette notices dated September 4, 2026, affect agencies in agriculture, education, energy, water, labour, technology and enterprise, with most of the appointments taking effect this month.
Ruto appointed Henry Gichuhi Kinyua as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Coffee Board of Kenya for a three-year term starting September 4, 2026.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 7 (1) (a) of the Coffee Act, I, William Samoei Ruto... appoint—Henry Gichuhi Kinyua to be the non-executive chairperson of the Coffee Board of Kenya, for a period of three (3) years,” the notice reads.
The President also renewed the term of Dr Geoffrey Mutai as Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenya Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Council for a further three years from September 9, 2026.
The latest appointments come as leadership changes continue across State corporations and public institutions, with several officials being appointed for the first time while others retain their positions for additional terms.
Prime and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi appointed Prof Vasey Mwanja as Non-Executive Chairperson of the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) Board.
Mwanja's three-year tenure began on September 4.
At the National Treasury, Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi renewed Michael Waititu Maina's appointment as a member of the Nairobi International Financial Centre Authority for another three years.
The energy sector also received a new board member after Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi appointed Dr Francis Ndwiga Benson to the Board of Directors of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
His three-year term took effect on September 4.
In the technology sector, Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo appointed Richard K. Makenga to the Board of the Information and Communications Technology Authority for a three-year term.
Kabogo also extended the terms of Evalyn Koiyan and Bevin Angellah Bhoke, who will serve for another three years on the Council of the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication.
Several education institutions also recorded changes in their governing bodies.
Dr Stella Keter and Stephen G. Chacha will remain members of the Kenya Education Management Institute Council for another three years.
The North Eastern National Polytechnic Council will have two new members, Ismael Ali Abdullahi and Abdirahman Noor Hassan, while Wilson A. Mtai has been appointed to the Kisiwa National Polytechnic Council.
Their three-year terms all begin on September 4.
In the industrial research sector, Investments, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui appointed Joyce M. Njogu to the Board of the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute for three years.
The Micro and Small Enterprises Authority is also set for a new team of eight board members following appointments by Cooperatives and MSMEs Development Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya.
The new members are Tobias Ouma Alando, James Kaburu, Wesley Kipkirui Siele, Margaret Gitonga, Timiro Adan Ibraham, Lucia Ndunge Kivila, Susan Nandwa and Adams S. Barasa.
Their three-year terms will begin on September 7.
In the water sector, Irene Chebichii Cheruiyot and Peter Nunda Mutisya have retained their positions on the Water Services Regulatory Board for another term.
John Billy Momanyi and Cecilia Ngetich have also been retained on the board of the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency.
The Water Resources Authority, however, will have a new board member after Fozia Ali Ibrahim was appointed to replace Hassan Ahamednur Baricha.
Baricha has since been appointed to a new position at the Kenya Water Institute, where he will serve on its Governing Council for three years.
Other appointments include that of retired military officer Capt. (Rtd) Augustine Ekitela to the Kerio Valley Development Authority for a one-year term.
At the Kenya Defence Forces Pensions Assessment Committee, Damaris Wanjiru Njoroge has been appointed secretary for three years.
The National Labour Board will retain six members for another three years following their re-appointment by Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua.
They are Francis Atwoli, Jacqueline Mugo, Dr Charles Kireru, Dickens Ouma, Moss Ndiema and Atie Swaleh Ramadhan.
