A growing number of politicians are making their way to the National Economic Development Party (NEDP) as former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko ramps up preparations for the 2027 General Election, saying the party has become a hub for political consultations following its full registration.
Sonko on Wednesday said NEDP has experienced a surge in interest since it was issued with its Certificate of Full Registration by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) on December 9, 2025, with leaders, aspiring candidates and members of the public visiting the party’s headquarters in Nairobi’s Upper Hill to discuss leadership and the country’s direction.
He said the offices remain busy throughout the week, with delegations and individuals seeking meetings as they explore opportunities within the party.
“Since our party received full registration, the response from Kenyans has been overwhelming. On an average day, I meet close to 100 people. Some come as delegations, others individually, all wanting to share ideas, discuss leadership and explore opportunities within NEDP,” he said.
According to Sonko, the party’s appeal has been driven by its willingness to accommodate leaders from different political backgrounds who believe in servant leadership, integrity and equal opportunity.
The party has already attracted several notable figures ahead of the next General Election. Former Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu has joined NEDP and plans to seek the Maara parliamentary seat in Tharaka Nithi on the party’s ticket.

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario has also signed up and intends to contest the Isiolo governor’s seat, while Maua Municipality Ward MCA Duncan Kangwana is among the latest elected leaders to move to the party.
As part of the ongoing engagements, Sonko has been meeting leaders from across the political divide to discuss possible collaborations before the 2027 polls.
Among those he has recently held talks with are Nairobi City County Public Service Board Deputy Chairperson Jack Owino, whom he urged to consider joining NEDP, and Nairobi County Assembly Minority Leader and Waithaka MCA Anthony Kiragu, popularly known as “Bishop”, with whom he discussed the political future of Dagoretti.
The party has also continued to receive leaders leaving other political formations. Former Kongoni Ward ODM MCA and Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa’s adviser Jasphat Musami Kititi has joined NEDP and is expected to contest the Lukuyani parliamentary seat, while Chogoria Traders Chairlady Lucy Gasheri, popularly known as “Momo”, has also left UDA for the party.
Sonko said the consultations are helping shape the party’s priorities before candidates are unveiled for the next General Election.
“These meetings are about listening. I want to hear the ideas of leaders, aspirants and ordinary wananchi. We exchange views, discuss the challenges facing our country and explore solutions before making major political decisions as a party,” he said.
He added that the engagements will continue over the coming months as the party prepares its roadmap for the 2027 General Election, expressing confidence that NEDP will be among the parties shaping Kenya’s political future.
