Speaking after the competition, KAWA Secretary General Erick Walucho told Radio Generation that national team selectors are using the league to identify athletes for the upcoming African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria.

Prisons Service Training College (PSTC) emerged winners of the Naivasha leg of the Kenya Amateur Wrestling Association (KAWA) national league, held at the Naivasha Social Hall in Nakuru County on Saturday.

The event marked the second leg of the national league series.

Speaking after the competition, KAWA Secretary General Erick Walucho told Radio Generation that national team selectors are using the league to identify athletes for the upcoming African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria.

“We don’t have much time and must prepare for the 2026 U-17, U-20, and Senior African Wrestling Championships scheduled for April 27 to May 2 in Egypt,” said Walucho.

He added that the continental event will serve as a key competition for elite wrestlers across Africa, as well as those preparing for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. He noted that Kenya has already qualified two young wrestlers for the Dakar Youth Olympics.

Watalam Wrestling Club finished second behind PSTC, while hosts Naivasha Wrestling Club took third place. Bungoma Wrestling Club came in fourth.

In individual performances, Benson Njoroge of PSTC won the under-60kg category, while Nelson Marwa of Naivasha finished second.

In the under-65kg category, Naivasha’s Davies Ochieng took top honors, with PSTC’s Levi Simuyu finishing second.

Rodgers Onyambu of Naivasha won the under-70kg category, followed by his teammate Duncan Orata in second place, while Ngila Manaseh of PSTC came third.

In the under-74kg category, PSTC’s James Omusange defeated Naivasha’s experienced Brian Oloo.

National team wrestler Mathayo Mahabila secured victory for PSTC in the under-79kg category. Alphonse Gumba of Naivasha finished second, while Evans Wafula of PSTC took third place.

In the over-125kg category, PSTC’s Dan Aura dominated the contest, beating Samson Juma of Naivasha, who finished second. Gilbert Messo of Naivasha came in third.

In the School Boys category, Arnold Otieno of Naivasha claimed victory, with his clubmate Ernest Kamunya finishing second. The category is part of KAWA’s talent development program, aimed at preparing young wrestlers for continental competitions and qualification for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.

Following the conclusion of the second leg, KAWA will now head to Nairobi for a roundtable meeting with national team coaches. The meeting will focus on selecting teams across senior, junior, and cadet categories—both male and female—for the upcoming championships in Alexandria.
