What Jubilee’s Matiang'i Migori tour signals for his 2027 campaign push

Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Fred Matiang'i has stepped up his campaign activities with a multi-day tour of Migori County, in a fresh effort to grow the party's support ahead of the 2027 General Election and strengthen its presence in a region that has for years been associated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

The former Interior Cabinet Secretary began the visit on Wednesday with engagements in Kuria West before heading to Kuria East on Thursday, according to the party's programme.

The tour comes after weeks in which Matiang'i maintained a lower public profile following a series of nationwide mobilisation visits earlier this year, and signals a renewed campaign drive by both the Jubilee Party and its presidential flag bearer.

Jubilee said the tour will extend to other parts of Migori County as the party works to expand its grassroots structures beyond areas where it has traditionally enjoyed support.

On the first day, Matiang'i is scheduled to visit Masaba, Kehancha, Ikerege and Isibania before moving to Kuria East on Thursday, where he will address residents in Kugitimo, Gwitembe and Senta.

Launching the tour, Matiang'i said the visit would focus on engaging residents and sharing the party's vision for the country."Day One of our Migori County tour begins today. Over the course of this journey, I look forward to listening to the people of Migori County, engaging with our communities, and reaffirming our shared commitment to building a united, just, and prosperous Kenya."

The visit forms part of J

ubilee's wider efforts to rebuild its political base after losing power in the 2022 General Election. Once the country's largest political party with the biggest representation in both the National Assembly and the Senate, Jubilee has in recent months increased grassroots activities as it prepares for the next election.

The party has placed Matiang'i at the centre of that rebuilding plan since naming him its deputy leader and presidential flag bearer. His campaign has focused on reaching voters across different parts of the country as Jubilee seeks to widen its appeal beyond its traditional support areas.

Matiang'i's profile within the opposition has also grown after his appointment to the Azimio la Umoja Coalition's National Executive Committee, the coalition's highest decision-making organ, adding to his role as one of Jubilee's leading figures.

Migori's selection as the latest campaign stop is expected to attract political attention because the county has long been viewed as one of ODM's strongest support bases and has maintained close political ties with the late Raila Odinga.

By taking its campaign to the county, Jubilee is signalling its intention to compete for support in areas that have traditionally backed rival political parties as competition ahead of the 2027 General Election begins to gather pace.

The Migori tour is also expected to test Jubilee's growing grassroots campaign strategy as the party works to position itself as a national political alternative through expanded local mobilisation and by projecting Matiang'i as its presidential candidate.
