Wambua names charges ahead of HSBC SVNS 2 in Nairobi

Kenya national Rugby 7s ( Shujaa ) head coach Kevin ' Bling' Wambua has named a strong squad of 12 men that has only a debutant ahead of the HSBC SVNS 2 Rugby series, an event already scheduled for Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on February 14-15, 2026.

Speaking in Nairobi on Monday while unveiling the 12 titans, Bling assured Kenyan rugby fans that first timer David Nyagige from Impala RFC has impressed in previous tournaments and training, hence justifying his maiden call-up.

"I have monitored Nyagige from the Embu 7s last season and also his performances last year during the Safari 7s," said Wambua

" He will gel well with the others as our objective remains the same, to qualify for division one rugby 7s World Series in 2027. Our campaign starts this Saturday at Nyayo," Wambua concluded.

National Rugby 7s Circuit champions Kenya Commercial Bank ( KCB ) will have their player George ' Japolo ' Ooro captaining Shujaa, assisted by club teammate Samuel Asati, while Vincent Onyala, Festus Shiasi, and Floyd Wabwire complete the list of five from KCB RFC making it to Bling's final cut.

Menengai Oilers has provided the duo of John Okoth and Dennis Abukuse to Shujaa, while the other players are Nygel Amaitsa of Strathmore Leos, Daystar Falcons.

Patrick Odongo, who was Shujaa's top try scorer in 2025, Chrisant Ojwang of Nakuru RFC, and Impala's David Nyangige.

2024 Paris Olympian Kevin Wekesa, who is also a 2025 IOC Climate Action Award winner, completes the 12-man squad that is set to commence the tournament's round robin format on Saturday, 10:50 am vs Canada, before meeting Belgium at 1:52 pm and rounding up the day with Germany at 4:54 pm.

On Sunday, Kenya will have two important games, beginning at 12:50 pm against Uruguay and finally at 5:02 pm vs USA.

When the first leg of this HSBC SVNS 2 will end on Sunday, February 15, 2026, in Nairobi, the next leg of the series is scheduled in Montevideo, Uruguay 21-22 March 21-22, 2026, and finally will conclude in Sao Paulo, Brazil, six days later, from March 28-29, 2026.
