Kalonzo decries political intolerance after Orengo attack

Political intolerance and alleged misuse of public resources have come under scrutiny, with Wiper Patriotic Front Leader Kalonzo Musyoka condemning the attack on Siaya Governor James Orengo and calling for greater accountability in government.

Speaking at the Salvation Army Church in Tala, Machakos County, on Sunday, Kalonzo termed the attack, which involved teargassing and the burning of Orengo’s vehicle, a serious violation of the Constitution and a sign of growing political intolerance.

Orengo, in a post on Sunday, expressed defiance over the incident, saying he would not be cowed and describing it as an attempt on his life.

“To the cowards who sprayed live bullets into my car and torched it in Awendo to hide your crimes: your desperate violence only proves your fear. You thought you eliminated me, but I am always steps ahead. You can’t burn down a movement, and you will never intimidate me,” Orengo said.

During his tour of Machakos, Kalonzo also questioned the procurement of new police uniforms, demanding transparency in the tendering process and expenditure.

He raised concern over possible misuse of public funds and called for the entire process to be subjected to proper scrutiny.

The Wiper leader further spoke about the alleged grabbing and forced eviction from more than 4,000 acres of land in Taita Taveta, which he said he witnessed during his visit to affected families.

He reaffirmed his commitment to defending the displaced persons.

Kalonzo warned that corruption, tribalism, abuse of public institutions and disregard for constitutional values are eroding the country’s foundations, urging Kenyans to remain vigilant and defend national values.

He called on the church to play its pivotal role in ensuring a just and united nation.

“Because you are part of the larger body of Christ, the time has come for the Kenyan church to stand strong for Jesus. The church should never stand for any human being,” Kalonzo said.

His comments came hours before a Linda Mwananchi rally in Meru County was teargassed as its leaders addressed residents.

The meeting continued after the smoke cleared, with Sifuna urging supporters to remain calm as the rally resumed.

“Hakuna siku tear gas itamaliza mkutano wa Linda Mwananchi,” Sifuna told the crowd as teargas canisters landed near supporters.

The incident occurred as the Linda Mwananchi movement continued its grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The Meru engagement was hosted by former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, who backed Sifuna for the 2027 presidential race. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and other leaders linked to Linda Mwananchi also attended.

The Meru incident follows several disruptions at Linda Mwananchi engagements in different parts of the country.

Earlier, the movement’s August 16 tour of Homa Bay was marked by roadblocks, burning tyres and attacks involving members of the entourage.

Two people died during the unrest, including a police officer.
