MTV Shuga Mashariki is making a thrilling return to Kenya after more than a decade, and the excitement has only grown with the unveiling of its new cast.
As the drama series gears up for its much-anticipated premiere, fresh talent is set to take center stage, bringing a new energy to the beloved show.
Between October 11 and 13, 2024 aspiring actors gathered at the University of Nairobi’s main campus, eager to secure a role in the series.
The open auditions provided a stage for young talent to shine, continuing MTV Shuga’s tradition of telling stories that resonate with audiences across Africa.
In addition to the in-person auditions, the show also opened its doors to actors from all parts of Kenya through virtual submissions, allowing a broader range of talent to take part in the selection process.
Leading the new cast are Serah Wanjiru, Basil Mungai, Matthew Ngugi, Wilson Muchemi, Fatuma Gichuru, Julie Brenda, Fridah Mumbe, Mariam Bishar, and Makena Kahuha.
Their performances are expected to bring to life the show’s powerful storytelling, which reflects real-life experiences of young people.
Mitchelle Kimathi, Country Manager for the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, highlighted the impact of the show’s return.
“MTV Shuga Mashariki marks a bold new chapter in the Shuga universe. We are proud to bring together a diverse cast that authentically reflects Kenyan culture while addressing the complex challenges young people face daily,” she said.
This season is part of a collaboration with Shujaaz Inc. under the Surround Sound Kenya Programme, an initiative aimed at exploring gender norms and their effects on young people.
The series is set to be directed by renowned Kenyan filmmakers June Ndinya, Mkaiwawi Mwakaba, and Likarion Wainaina, adding to the anticipation of what promises to be a compelling and thought-provoking season.
