Henderson and Jota shared 77 appearances together at Liverpool, forging not just a successful partnership but a genuine friendship.

Jordan Henderson waited four long years for a Premier League goal. When it finally arrived, it was never going to be just about football.

Brentford’s veteran midfielder found the net in Sunday’s draw against Leeds, but the moment belonged as much to memory as it did to the scoreline.

As the ball nestled in the net at the Gtech Community Stadium, Henderson dropped to the turf and recreated a celebration every Liverpool fan knows by heart—sitting down, controller in hand, pretending to play a computer game.

It was Diogo Jota’s celebration. And it was done for Diogo Jota.

Henderson and Jota shared 77 appearances together at Liverpool, forging not just a successful partnership but a genuine friendship. Jota’s life was tragically cut short in July when the Portugal international died in a car crash aged just 28, alongside his brother André Silva. The shock still ripples through football, and for Henderson, the pain remains raw.

“That was for him,” the 35-year-old told Sky Sports. “It was his birthday recently. We will never forget him—we always remember him forever. I can only imagine what the lads at Liverpool are going through.”

The goal carried extra weight. It was Henderson’s first in the Premier League since December 2021, when he scored in a thumping 4–1 Merseyside derby win over Everton—another day when Jota also found the net.

“He was a good friend,” Henderson said quietly. “And like I said, I don’t score many goals, so I thought I would dedicate it to him.”

The depth of Henderson’s grief was laid bare in the days after Jota’s death. The former Liverpool captain was seen in tears as he laid flowers outside Anfield, paying his respects to a team-mate who meant far more than just goals and trophies.

On Instagram, Henderson captured the feeling simply: “It was a pleasure to share a pitch with you, but more importantly a friendship.”

The pair’s shared history included the 2022 FA Cup final at Wembley, where Liverpool defeated Chelsea on penalties—another chapter in a journey defined by success, resilience, and unity.

Now back in English football after spells with Al-Ettifaq and Ajax, Henderson continues to defy the years. At 35 years and 180 days, his deflected low strike—taking a touch off Leeds defender Jaka Bijol—made him Brentford’s oldest Premier League goalscorer. Although Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header later denied the Bees victory, the moment had already etched itself into something far more meaningful.

Brentford boss Keith Andrews was quick to praise the midfielder’s influence.

“Jordan’s experience and knowledge of the game is second to none,” he said. “He’s been an impactful player for us. He’s settled in really well and played a big part. Long may it continue.”

For Henderson, the goal will be remembered not for the stat it ended, but for the tribute it carried—a quiet, powerful reminder that football never forgets its own, and that some celebrations echo far beyond the pitch.
