Tahmeed breaks silence after Konza crash kills six

Tahmeed Express has confirmed that six people, including its driver and the driver of a truck involved in the collision, died after one of its buses was involved in a fatal road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Konza shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the bus company said the crash involved bus KDL 079S in the Kapiti area and left several passengers with minor injuries. It said those injured received medical attention, with some treated and discharged before continuing with their journey.

“Five passengers remained under medical observation and, following discharge this morning, continued their journey aboard our 8:00 a.m. service from Nairobi to Mombasa,” Tahmeed Express said.

The company expressed condolences to the families and friends of those who died, describing the loss as devastating.

“We deeply regret to confirm that six people lost their lives in the incident, including our driver and the driver of the truck involved. This is an immense loss, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.

Tahmeed said it is working closely with the relevant authorities as investigations into the accident continue.

According to the company, preliminary information indicates that one truck attempting to overtake was hit from behind by another truck, leading to a collision that forced one of the vehicles into the path of the oncoming Tahmeed bus. However, it stressed that the official investigations would determine the exact cause of the crash.

“We will refrain from further comment on the cause until authorities conclude their inquiries,” Tahmeed Express Ltd said.

The company added that the safety and well-being of its passengers and staff remain its highest priority and said it is offering support to families affected by the tragedy.

“The safety and well-being of our passengers and staff remain our highest priority. We are cooperating fully with the investigating agencies and are in contact with the affected families to offer appropriate support,” the statement said.

Tahmeed also thanked emergency response teams, police officers, medical personnel and members of the public who responded quickly to the scene to rescue victims and assist the injured.

Police said the accident occurred at around 1.00 a.m. near the Kapiti area, a few kilometres from Konza Technopolis in Athi River Sub-county.

Kalama Sub-county Police Commander Patrick Gaitirira said the collision involved three vehicles comprising two trailers and the Tahmeed bus.

“This morning we had a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at around 1.00 am. It involved three vehicles, two trailers and a bus,” Gaitirira said.

He said the six victims died at the scene as rescue teams responded to the incident. The crash also caused a major traffic snarl-up along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway as emergency responders cleared the wreckage and assisted the injured.

The latest accident has renewed concerns over safety along the Konza stretch of the highway, coming seven months after another deadly crash at the same location claimed six lives and left seven others critically injured.

That earlier accident occurred on January 2, 2026, at Katumani near Konza City and involved a bus and a matatu. The matching death toll in both crashes has once again drawn attention to the recurring road accidents along the busy highway as authorities continue investigations into the latest tragedy.
